With so many myths, and misconceptions flying around about acupuncture I wanted to set the record straight by sharing 10 little known facts about Acupuncture, showing how truly remarkable this ancient practice truly is…
1. It Treats More Than Pain
The majority of patients I see in my clinic come in for back pain, headaches, shoulder pain and other types of persistent pain, but acupuncture also effectively treat many other types of conditions like insomnia, stress, menstrual irregularity, asthma, pregnancy, digestion and more.
2. Needles Are Our Friends
Not only are the needles small and thin, they are nothing like the needles most people picture drawing blood at a doctor’s office. Acupuncture needles come in all shapes and sizes and some are so fine like hair many times patients don’t realize they’re in.
3. It Takes More Than One Time…
To get maximum benefits you should come in for the number of recommended sessions prescribed by your acupuncturist, because each treatment builds on the next, plus the results are cumulative. Just like doctors give you a prescribed dose (take this pill daily for a week), acupuncture treatments work the same way and will work best followed as prescribed.
4. It’s A Great Teacher
The interesting thing about acupuncture is that we’re working with the bodies’ natural ability to heal rather than adding or subtracting things with external intervention. This is a beautiful lesson that can be applied to our own lives as well. The basic concept- by stimulating the bodies self-regulatory processes, our bodies knows how to heal themselves and function optimally.
5. Acupuncturists Are Highly Educated
Most people do not realize the extent that acupuncturists go through during professional training. For example, the Masters Level program in Traditional Chinese Medicine that I completed included over 3,200 academic hours. Furthermore there was extensive testing in order to become Licensed Acupuncturists and Herbalists with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and additonal state boards, such as California.
6. Eat A Few Hours Before Treatment
Food gives your body the energy and fuel to maximize treatment. A full meal isn’t necessary, you can have a snack, just make sure it’s a few hours before treatment. Receiving care with stable blood sugar is always your best bet.
7. It’s Backed By The World Health Organization
Acupuncture is approved by the World Health Organization to treat over 100 symptoms and diseases that include: allergies, depression, lower back pain, headaches, nausea, and relief for labour, chemotherapy and radiation.
8. It’s An Ancient Practice
Acupuncture goes as far back as 3,000–4,000 years with needles originally made from stone, bone and bamboo. Of course nowadays, needles are sterile and disposable, so they are never shared between patients and are only used once.
9. You Get Bonus Side Effects!
I continually see patients benefit beyond the chief issue they are seeking relief from. Most commonly patients report: better sleep, improved digestion, less stress, greater energy, mental clarity and emotional ease.
10. Acupuncture May Have Insurance Coverage
Many insurance companies include Acupuncture under the benefits package and if you have a Health Spending Account acupuncture is also covered very likely covered. (USA)
As you’ve seen, Acupuncture is rooted in ancient tradition and has stood the test of time. As an acupuncturist I can happily say that I am delighted to be sharing such a wonderful gift with the world.
If you would love to eliminate pain, achieve optimal health and wellbeing, acupuncture is an unbelievable method to achieve your health goals. Don’t let a fear of needles stand in your way… if you give them a try, chances are you will be surprised by how pleasant the process can be.
