I actually have a couple of containers of cottage cheese in my fridge at the moment. Because I was overweight and needed to lose weight naturally. So, I got into the great habit of eating it. Cottage cheese is fairly low in calories and overall healthy.
We like the foodstuff. And quite simply, I had to get into the swing of eating it, like Richard Simmons said at first it’s like eating tops of pencils the “erasers” and I continue to eat it to this day.
Obviously, I buy the fat-free variety. But, beware of this. A lot of the cottage cheese you get replaces the fat by adding big amounts of one or more ingredients.
In my particular case, although it has less than 0.1 grams of fat in, it does contain 5% salt. And in case you did not know, yes, the salt is bad for you. And, it is especially bad for anyone who may be “on a diet”.

Fat – < 0.1 grams – <1%
Saturated fats – <0.1 g – 1%
Energy – 1464 kj/ 38kcal – 2 %
Sugars -2.8 g – 3%
SALT 0.3 g – 5%
JUST 36 CALORIES – SOUNDS GOOD, BUT…
As you can see from the ingredients list, just how much of a % is made up of salt. And all that and only 0.3 grams.
Eating to much salt can throw any diet into turmoil it certainly can. Salt, sugar, and of course fat, are the three main causes of weight gain, to be aware of. Especially when either just watching your weight, or if you are trying to lose weight.
Not All Fats Are Bad For You
Please, know this, though. Not all fats are bad for you, so it is definitely better to know the differences between the good fats and bad fats.

Obviously, in this post, We only spoke of low-fat cottage cheese. The strongest advice and you must listen to this. Read the ingredients on anything which says it is low fat.
You just never know where manufacturers may have MADE UP for it having “LOW” fat.
Healthy Recipes – Is Cottage Cheese Fattening?
Cottage cheese tunafish sandwiches are delicious! Overall healthy compared to traditional tunafish sandwhiches. Replace the mayo with cottage cheese. You can also mix the following:
- 1 can albacore tuna or regular tuna (in water is much healthier than in oil)
- 2/3 cup non-fat cottage cheese
- 4 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt (optional)
- 1/4 small red onion, chopped finely
- 1 stalk celery, chopped finely
- splash of lemon juice pinch or two of dill
Or extremely easy just mix in some tomatoes (cherry or diced regular) and enjoy this amazingly low calorie food! This is a favorite among many! Garden fresh tomatoes are soooo much better in cottage cheese.

This is also an easy way to enjoy cottage cheese I recommend fresh pineapple because if you read the label on most canned pineapple you will see it is typically packed with other ingredients including sodium (salt), added sugar, and more! So keep it fresh if you are trying to lose weight or prevent it!

Our conclusion is that cottage cheese is a healthier alternative to many other unhealthy options. I do recommend checking labels and ensuring you are purchasing high-quality products and nothing that appears low in calories and packed with other ingredients that are otherwise unhealthy for you. But is cottage cheese fattening? The low fat options are great for losing weight but like anything if you start adding sugar or other bad ingredients it can be just as bad for you as other unhealthy snacks.
