Is Salt Bad For You?

The USA About 90% of Americans 2 years old or older consume too much sodium chloride (salt) but is salt bad for you?.  Also, The UK, it is a fact that they consume far too much salt. How much is too much? I will tell you. Because in this post, I  am going to highlight the bad things about salt. And what it can do to your overall health.

Now, the first thing that I will mention is this. It can increase the chances of heart disease and could even bring on a stroke. Both of which we DO NOT WANT, not ever.

Another thing that I will say is this. If you are to follow the guides in this post. Then you do not need to worry if salty foods are bad for you or not.

Salt Can Kill You, So Is Salt Bad For You?

There is no getting around it. Salt slowly kills you. If you eat too much of it then it puts you at massive risk.

Now hear this. In the UK, a third of all adults eat way too much salt.  Yes, you read it correctly! A massive third. That can result in high blood pressure due to the high amount of salt.  The USA 90% of adults eat too much salt!

We should all be aware that having high blood pressure shows no symptoms. That can lead to people “stroking out” (suffering from a stroke).

Furthermore, at some point your risk increases of developing heart disease, so pay close attention to your sodium chloride levels (scientific name for salt). In an ideal world, we should stick to unsalted butter, pork, chickenlamb and also unsalted ham.

In other words, a reduction of the amount of sodium that you eat. Well, this will also lower your chances of suffering and therefore actually developing these illnesses. A fact!

It’s not bad for you in small quantities, but it can be when you eat a lot of it. It can be very dangerous.

Maybe it will not immediately affect you. But further on down the line, it can be the cause of your ill health.

​So, is salt bad for you? Yes and no. It is fine when consumed in normal amounts. As I am telling you, it can be deadly when you eat high amounts of it. Here are some guides that you should not exceed.

We all want to be in good health, right? So, stick to these your will improved health and salt will not affect you in a negative way. I can only advise you of the dangers of salt but ultimately it is ultimately up to you.

The recommendation in UK is that the average adult to consume no more than 1500 milligrams per day.

USA (Is Salt Bad For You?)

USA recommendation is Americans consume less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day as part of a healthy eating pattern.  (Source CDC)

Did you know that the average American consumes over 2400 milligrams? You surely do not need me to tell you that this is very unhealthy and could lead to problems including cariovascular disease.

Children Under 11 And Babies

 

It does make complete sense, and surely it is pure logic. Those children under 11 and babies should certainly eat far less salt than the adults of this world.

The safe guide for salt intake for children it will be age dependent. Here follows guide*

  • 1-3 years of age – 2 grams of salt per day (0.8 grams of sodium)
  • 4 to 6 years – 3 grams salt a day (1.2 grams sodium)
  • 7 to 10 years – 5 grams salt a day (2 grams sodium)
  • 11 years and over – 6 grams salt a day (2.4 grams sodium)

The safe guide for a baby is as follows –

  • If the baby is a year old. Then he or she must have 1 gram or under to be on the safe side. If you are in doubt or unsure, please check the label.

Being sure that your baby does not eat too much salt. It will also mean that your little one does not develop a taste for salty foods. That would otherwise lead to an unhealthy liking of anything that is salty. Either down the road or on into later life.

A List Of Some Salty Foods

If it is that you do eat some of the salty foods on this list. Then you should cut down on the amount that you eat them. (In other words, eat them less often and have much smaller portions.

  • Salted or Dry roasted peanuts
  • Pizza
  • Soy sauce
  • Olives
  • Pickles
  • Ham
  • Salty Snacks (Pretzels, popcorn, chips)
  • Salty fish
  • Bagels
  • Prawns
  • Certain pasta (check the label)
  • Salami
  • Gravy Granules
  • Smoked meat
  • Smoked fish
  • Restaurant Soups
  • Yeast extract
  • Cheese
  • Anchovies

I bet you love a lot of the foods that I mentioned, right? Well as I said before when eaten in normal amounts, they are fine. (Unless you are undergoing a diet) If you are then they should be off the table, and you know that.) It is only when you eat a lot of these foods, do they become a danger to your health. So, eat it in moderation and live long, eat wisely, and be healthy.

Whenever you need to diet. You always have to do your research first.
